Hi all, how is InfraCost better than KubeCost??
w
Hi GR, they are different tools, Infracost focuses on infra-as-code (e.g. Terraform), Kubecost focuses on K8s costs.
g
Can not we see cost history in InfraCost?
w
Infracost Cloud shows history and analytics too. See the video on Infracost.io for a quick demo.
g
My understanding is that Infracost covers a lot more resources than kubecost.
@white-airport-8778 I searched but couldn't find one, could you please give me links to such videos that show how Infracost is keeping cost history?
w
https://www.infracost.io/ then click on the Watch video button (we recently updated the website so the video is now behind that button)
g
Thanks. Just a quick question: can Infracost show EKS pod level granularity in cost breakdown?
w
not yet, I’d love to learn more about the problem you’re trying to solve if you have 10mins to jump on a zoom call though?
g
Trying to solve end to end FinOps solution, with granularity level up to pod level.
KubeCost does the pod level cost history breakdown
w
I see, so being able to run infracost on your machine, and see the infra layer as well as the pod layer together?
g
Yep
w
how important is the pre-deploy estimate for pods? or for pods do you care more about the actual costs after the pod is running?
g
Because each pod represents different business sections that need to cover the cost
The post deployment month to month cost reporting is more important than predeployment estimate
w
which cloud vendor are you using? do their native tools help with that?
g
AWS Cloud watch does cost reporting but it's not as intuitive as KubeCost or Infracost
w
thanks, I’d suggest subscribing to https://github.com/infracost/infracost/issues/1541 for updates, it’s an area we want to explore soonish
